Addictions: behavioral addictions

There are few data on behavioral addictions for a variety of reasons - in particular for methodological problems.

It seems that between 1 to 6% of the general population is subject to compulsive shopping behavior. Women are the most concerned.

Another example of the game is that pathological gamblers spend 14 to 45% of their income on gambling.

The fight against addictions strengthened

To better address the problems related to addictions that are now a major public health issue, the 2007-2011 Government Plan on "Management and prevention of addiction" has been put in place. The aim is to strengthen and coordinate existing mechanisms and develop resources at all stages of the management of these problems (prevention, care and social support).

The originality of this Plan on addictions is to set up a management of addictions in a "transversal" way. Therapeutic and preventive approaches to addictions that were previously carried out by products (tobacco, alcohol ...) are "decompartmentalize". The problem is now to consider globally whether or not it is linked to substances.

Our advices

> If you are wondering about your behaviors that are obviously addictive, do not hesitate to consult.

> You can consult your doctor, a doctor specializing in addictions (in hospitals, for example, the number of consultations dedicated to this problem should increase). You can also contact a psychotherapist specializing in addiction phenomena.
