The symptoms of anemia depend on the importance of decreasing the effectiveness of red blood cells.
In case of mild anemia, one suffers from fatigue, pale skin, shortness of breath at the least effort.
In case of more advanced anemia, to these symptoms are added:
- tinnitus and sometimes
- a moderate fever.
In more severe cases, vomiting may occur, as well as amenorrhea in women and impotence in men.
In case of prolonged anemia, the person may suffer from repetitive infections.
To diagnose anemia and assess its importance, first take a blood test to make a blood count (NFS), with a hemoglobin assay.
The diagnosis of anemia is made in the face of the decrease in the concentration of hemoglobin (Hb). Below 13 g / 100 ml in men and 12 g / 100 ml in women. Other parameters are taken into account: the number of red blood cells, the hematocrit which is the ratio between the volume of red blood cells and the whole blood (serum + red blood cells). Other blood tests are sometimes requested: it is possible to ask for a determination of serum iron.
To clarify certain criteria of anemia, other examinations can be requested: dosage of research of antibodies against red blood cells, myelogram ...
