In this case, the administration of antibiotics is useless, even harmful.
Since angina is caused by a virus, the doctor will try to fight the symptoms: to lower the fever and to eliminate the pains. The treatment will therefore be based on the administration of a medicine for pain and / or fever, and lozenges, sprays or mouthwashes to fight sore throat.

Treatment of bacterial angina

The doctor will prescribe antibiotics. It is most commonly a treatment with penicillin (amoxicillin ...).

The treatment should be scrupulously respected until the end of the prescription, even if the symptoms improve.

And if the patient is allergic to penicillin?
In this case, the doctor will find alternative antibiotics (2nd or 3rd generation cephalosporins, or erythromycin).
