Death anxiety should not be confused with the fear of dying which is a normal feeling of survival that the vast majority of people experience.

The anxiety of death is rather defined as a psychotic anxiety. It can have different forms: the fear of imminent death, or the anxiety of death existential.

The fear of imminent death

The fear of impending death corresponds to a "sickly fear" of dying or having loved ones die. Many events in everyday life can provoke and feed this anxiety: car transport, sudden death ... This fear can become obsessive and totally disrupt the daily life of the person who is a victim.

Existential death anxiety

The anxiety of death existential, meanwhile, corresponds to a deep feeling of emptiness. Dying being linked to the loss of one's existence, can mean losing all sense of self, of one's life. By focusing his attention on this subject, the person will feed his questions and his fears. The person who is afraid of losing control of themselves, may have episodes of panic fear. This problem occurs more often in a subject who lacks confidence. He tries to keep control of his existence, but does not succeed and is anxious about this idea ... It is quite normal to have a fear of death, but to accept death and not (too much) worry about his death. subject is to have confidence in life.

The signs of death anxiety are obsessive thoughts of death, and all that relates to it: fear of infections, illnesses, hypochondriac behavior ... that concerns his own person or a loved one. Everything related to death - words related to death, black color ... - can even be feared by the person. She does not support them. The phobia of this universe has settled in his head. And if nothing is done to correct this phobia, the harm and suffering it causes, extend and hinder more and more everyday life, the social life of the person who is a victim.

Treatments differ slightly depending on the type of death anxiety (imminent or existential). Behavioral therapy can certainly help the sufferer, and soothe, and even defeat, his suffering. Medications, such as anxiolytics, can only be a transient solution.
