Interview of Dr. Sophie Silcret Grieu, allergist, who gives advice on allergies to cosmetics ...
With the replacement of paraben in many cosmetics, there has been an increase in allergic phenomena. Why ?
Dr. Silcret Grieu: Parabens are preservatives used in cosmetics to prevent the proliferation of microbes. In recent years, there has been a controversy over the possible harmful effects of parabens that could stimulate estrogen receptors, which would promote the occurrence of breast cancer.
On the wave of this media controversy, we developed products without parabens. According to the precautionary principle, in doubt, one is free to buy products without parabens.
The replacement product for parabens therefore causes allergies?
Dr. SG: The parabens have been replaced by another preservative, methylisothiazolinone. Now present in many cosmetics and care products (shampoos, conditioners, dishwashing liquids, etc.), methylisothiazolinone has created a true allergy epidemic. It must be said that this preservative is not toxic, but health authorities have not listed as many allergies with parabens, as with methylisothiazolinone.

Allergy to hair colorations
Hair colorings often cause allergic reactions. Why ?
Dr. SG: Allergic reactions triggered by hair coloring are an example of contact allergies. These are allergic reactions that can develop even if you have no allergic terrain. They are caused by sensitization of skin cells to chemicals.
How do you become allergic to these dyes?
Dr. SG: The principle remains the same: the skin comes into contact one or more times with the allergenic substance, and becomes more and more aware. After, suddenly, she starts to react to the allergen at the place of contact. By definition, contact allergy is limited to the place of contact with the allergen.
What substance in particular should we be wary of?
Dr. SG: In the case of hair coloring, the allergenic substance is paraphenylenediamine (PPD): it is present in all the chemical dyes and in the colorings that are done in the hairdresser. If you are allergic to this substance, each contact will trigger an increasingly severe reaction, which can begin several hours or days after contact.
What is the solution ?
Dr. SG: The only "treatment" possible against these allergic reactions is to suppress contact with the allergen. Attention, this dye is contained in very high concentrations in products called "henna" for temporary tattoos, often proposed in summer on the Mediterranean beaches, responsible for many allergies.
Allergic reactions to paints, glues ...
Do substances that have a strong odor from paints, glues ... can they cause real allergic reactions?
Dr. Silcret Grieu: In general, allergic reactions develop only against natural substances (pollen, food, mites, etc.). So-called "indoor pollutants" among which the famous "volatile organic compounds" are chemical substances released by glues, varnishes, scented candles, deodorants, which can give reactions resembling an allergic crisis.
However, more than allergic reactions, it is irritative reactions. These substances can be particularly irritating and people who suffer from respiratory allergies are even more sensitive to volatile organic compounds because their respiratory mucosa is already inflamed by the allergic reaction.Want to react, share your experience or ask a question?
