50% of the women using the deesogestrel reported bleeding irregularities. As deesogestrel leads to an inhibition of ovulation close to 100%, unlike other progestin-only pills, the irregularity of bleeding is more frequent than with these other pills. In 20-30% of women, bleeding may occur more frequently, whereas in 20% of women bleeding may be less frequent or absent altogether. Vaginal bleeding may also be longer lasting. After a few months of treatment, bleeding tends to be less frequent. Information, tips and a bleeding tracking booklet can help women to better accept them.
The other most commonly reported undesirable effects (frequency> 2.5%) in clinical trials with deesestrel are: acne, mood modification, mastodynia, nausea and weight gain. The undesirable effects mentioned in the table below, were considered by the investigators as having a certain, probable or possible causal link with the treatment. Within each frequency group, the undesirable effects are presented in a decreasing order of gravity.
