Diabetes: the symptoms

You can have diabetes, that is, too much blood sugar, without any symptoms. This is why this disease is at risk, because complications related to hyperglycemia can occur without being alerted by symptoms.

However, some signs may occur, such as:

  • slimming,
  • a sensation of repeated thirst,
  • a frequent urge to go to urinate ...

The diagnosis of diabetes is made by taking a fasting blood test or sometimes by taking blood after having absorbed a large quantity of sugar.

But sometimes it is through a urine test (with strip test) that the disease is detected. Indeed, a hyperglycemia causes a passage of the sugar in the urine; a glycosuria appears, which can be detected by dipping a strip into the urine.

The discovery of diabetic disease is often made during a systematic examination of urine in school health, occupational medicine, at the doctor. Or during a blood test performed on an empty stomach (for a control).

When the diagnosis of diabetes is made, it is important to get treatment, to avoid complications, because too high sugar can have very serious consequences for the body.
