Egg donation: how are you doing? : The opinion of the specialist

The advice of Dr. Hélène Letur, gynecologist-endocrinologist, doctor of reproduction, at the HP HP Pitié Salpêtrière, President of Gédo (Study Group on oocyte donation).

A few days before oocyte retrieval, hormonal treatment is performed causing ovarian stimulation. What are the potential risks in the short and medium term?

In the short term, there may be a significant response of the ovary, a small weight gain related to a water retention that will be lost during the following periods, bloating, perhaps some moderate bleeding at the point of puncture, and low risks inherent in any medico-surgical procedure. To avoid them, the teams are trained, monitor ovarian stimulation to adapt the treatment, and work in aseptic conditions suitable for any surgery.
There is no recognized risk in the medium or long term.

How many oocytes can we give over a lifetime?

Due to a painful gait, it is not recommended more than two or three times in a lifetime. It takes a minimum of three to four months between two ovarian stimulations.

What can you tell women to encourage them to donate their eggs?

It is an unfathomable suffering for those women who come to our consultation and who fail to be mothers. This suffering is associated with a sense of achievement of a life project, and profound injustice. Egg donors help these couples realize their desire and plan to become a parent.

What do you think of the practices that are done abroad, where many French women leave to donate eggs, accompanied by a couple to be treated?

The major problem is that of an unequal situation between supply and demand. This can be partly solved by improving the dissemination of donation information.
In addition, we suffer from a lack of human and material resources to ensure support at the height of demand. Also, wait times can be long for those who want to have a baby. Going abroad is therefore logically considered by couples, which highlights a certain situation of inequality of access to care, and drifts avoided in France can emerge.

You can give an example on these drifts?

Foreign clinics canvassing at the French centers and some even offer a possibility of retrocession of fees if they send them patients! We are talking about altruistic donations in some countries, but what about the motivation of women who give six times in six months with compensation?
These excesses that make believe that anything can be bought must stop because they are contrary to the ethics of the gift, and the dignity of the body and the human person.
