Urinary leakage: treatments

The treatments for urinary leakage will not be the same, depending on whether it is stress incontinence or urge incontinence.

There are different types of treatments:

Modification of the lifestyle

Urinary leakage can be a sign of some health problems. Thus, too much weight often leads to incontinence. It is therefore important to monitor your weight and play sports.
Good body care and a healthy lifestyle can be an effective treatment for urinary incontinence.

Perineal rehabilitation

The physiotherapist or the midwife (postpartum) can help you. They are trained for this. This involves performing exercises to tone the pelvic floor.

Be careful of the abs: when they are not performed under the supervision of a physiotherapist or a midwife, they can, on the contrary, promote incontinence.

Perineal rehabilitation will also teach you how to control your urge to urinate. In fact, physiotherapy allows you to become aware of the perineal muscles and thus tone the pelvic floor to strengthen it. This reeducation is prescribed for 12 to 15 sessions, supported by the Social Security.

But beware: once the rehabilitation sessions are over, you will have to continue the exercises at home.

Follow the exercises and advice of our coach who offer some gentle exercises for muscle perineum. Warning: These exercises proposed by the sports coach do not replace in any case a perineal reeducation performed by a physiotherapist!

Surgery

It is considered when incontinence becomes truly disabling. If, formerly, the surgeons advocated the rise of the bladder, since about ten years, it is a method much less invasive which is preferred: the installation of suburethral strips.

To note: For the incontinence of effort, it is the reeducation which is privileged. In the case of incontinence by overactive bladder, drug treatment will be considered first.

Medication

Depending on the type of incontinence, the doctor may prescribe anticholinergic drugs . This is what he does in case of overactive bladder.

The purpose of anticholinergics is to reduce the bladder reflex. Treatment is usually prescribed for a period of three months.
At the end of this period, the doctor makes an evaluation. If there is improvement, the treatment is continued.

If the results show incomplete improvement, a urodynamic examination will be required. This is an examination to find out the tonicity and pressure exerted inside the bladder. It's cystomanometry.

The operation

The placement of suburethral strips is the surgical technique most appreciated by specialists. It is less invasive than the previous techniques (which consisted mainly of lifting the bladder), and it works in 90% of cases.

The rapid procedure is to put a kind of synthetic tape under the urinary tube (which leads the urine of the bladder to the outside).

The advantage of this ribbon is that it does not prevent urine from evacuating but allows to retain them during efforts.
The abdominal forces push the urinary tract against the tape, which prevents leaks.
At rest, when the bladder contracts for urination, the ribbon lets out the urine.

In addition to its high success rate, the intervention is rapid and does not require long hospitalization.

Prevention

First, a healthy lifestyle . Attention to weight, overweight is an aggravating factor.
Remember to stay toned. The muscles of the perineum must remain strong for as long as possible.

Be careful of repeated efforts that may promote loosening of the perineum (the region between the anus and the vagina).
Chronic constipation, for example, can be a cause of incontinence, just as some professional efforts or the practice of sports, such as tennis, basketball ...

Caution: Chronic smoking is a risk factor.

Stretch marks: treatments

Once formed, it is not possible to remove the stretch marks spontaneously. Different treatments are able to mitigate with more or less success (and to be honest: the effectiveness of these treatments is far from conclusive, despite the promises announced by the brand!). To prevent the appearance of stretch marks, it is important to properly hydrate the skin with appropriate creams, especially during "at risk" like pregnancy, for example

Genu valgum: knees in X

The term genu valgum is of Latin origin, and corresponds to a form of knee projecting the leg off, that is to say towards the outside of the body. When both knees are carrying this morphology they are sometimes called "cagneux". This means that the legs adopt an X shape. A genu valgum means that the legs do not appear straight anymore
