Laryngitis: the causes

The causes

The causes of laryngitis vary with the age and location of the inflammation.

1 - Subglottic laryngitis

It is a laryngitis of the small child between 1 and 6 years old. It is often observed in the course of a rhino-pharyngitis (cold) of viral origin.

2 - Epiglottitis

Epiglottitis is a severe bacterial laryngitis caused by a bacterium such as haemophilus influenzae.

3 - Laryngitis of the big child and the adult

The causes of these laryngitis are most often infectious. They appear during an influenza episode or pharyngitis.

The causes of laryngitis can also be irritating. This is the case of gastro-oesophageal reflux laryngitis, or smoker's chronic laryngitis.

This laryngitis is due to permanent irritation of the larynx because of the acidity of the gastric juices that go back to the larynx, or tobacco; this chronic irritation can turn into cancer. This is why a hoarse voice in a smoker must lead him to consult his doctor.

Another cause is vocal vocal irritation laryngitis. It concerns people who use their voice intensively, such as teachers, singers ...

Symptoms

1 - Stridulous acute laryngitis (subglottic)

It is also called "false croup" because the cough resembles that of diphtheria.

The symptoms of this acute laryngitis begin in the evening or early in the night: the child has fever (38-39 ° C), his voice becomes more and more hoarse, and his breathing becomes laborious.

The cough is very characteristic, and is similar to the sound of a bark.

2 - Epiglottitis

The epiglottis is a cartilaginous anatomical structure behind and at the bottom of the tongue. It acts as a valve at the time of swallowing (when we drink or when we swallow something) and allows food to pass into the esophagus, located behind the trachea.

Epiglottitis can occur in small children in a high fever setting. It can be serious because the swelling of the epiglottis can clog and compromise the passage of air.

The child has a covered voice, similar to that of a toad. He is quickly out of breath and unable to eat anything. His state of health can deteriorate very quickly.

3 - Laryngitis of the big child and the adult

These are the classic extinctions of voice, giving as symptoms a simply hoarse voice or a total aphonia. They do not have the urgency of laryngitis of the child.

Chondrocalcinosis: the causes

It is an arthropathy caused by deposits of calcium pyrophosphate in the joints (the most affected are those of the knees and wrists). The frequency of chondrocalcinosis increases with age: it never appears before the age of 30, and usually after the age of fifty

Color blindness

Color blindness or dyschromatopsia is a relatively common condition. The origin of this eye disease is related to abnormalities affecting a thin membrane covering the inside of the eye: the retina. Sensitive to light, the retina is made up of millions of cells that send light messages to the brain, which analyze them and allow us to visualize them as images
