The IUD: how does it work?

The IUD, by its presence in the uterus, greatly disrupts the progression of sperm and eggs. It also prevents implantation of the egg in the uterine lining by a kind of bio-chemical reaction at this level.

The IUD is one of the safest methods of contraception: the efficacy failure rate is estimated to be less than 1%, compared to 5-6% for the pill.

Another advantage: no risk of forgetting or "accidents", as with the pill for example.

The sterilizer is a contraceptive method that is extremely well tolerated. In their great majority, the women who use it are satisfied: after the pose, they forget it completely. They only manifest disorders, of various kinds, in less than 10% of cases *.

Who is the IUD looking for?

It is a method of contraception widely used in France, it is more readily prescribed after pregnancy. But a priori, the IUD can be offered to everyone. To all women wishing to use contraception.

In practice, however, the IUD is prescribed primarily for women who have had children. Yet, nothing contra-indicates its use to young women who are not yet moms.

Contrary to popular belief, the IUD does not render infertile, nor does it increase the risk of ectopic pregnancies afterwards.

It should be noted that women with an IUD are no more prone to ectopic pregnancy than women without an IUD.

What follow-up after the pose?

Approximately one month after the installation, a check is planned to check that everything is going well, that the IUD is well positioned, that there is no embarrassment or particular pain.

After this first check, one consultation per year is sufficient in the absence of symptoms of appeal (pain, etc.)

On video: Can all women have an IUD inserted?

A priori, the IUD can be offered to women of any age, even if it is most often proposed after pregnancies. However, the IUD can not be used in the same way in all women. Explanations in video.
