Conjunctivitis

Conjunctivitis is inflammation of the conjunctiva. We speak of keratoconjunctivitis (kerato = cornea) when the cornea and conjunctiva of the eye are affected.

The conjunctiva is on the surface of the eye. When we look at a front eye, we guess a very thin and transparent membrane that covers the surface of the eye and the inside of the eyelids. In the middle of the visible part of the eye, there is a thicker tissue: the cornea which is in front of the pupil and the iris. In profile, this cornea is a little convex, it is transparent, it is through it that the eye sees.

When the conjunctiva and the cornea are the seat of irritation, inflammation, it is said to be a keratoconjunctivitis. It is important to know the cause of conjunctivitis or keratoconjunctivitis to of course treat the disease and not let the disorder settle. Indeed, it is not necessary that the cornea loses its transparency because of chronic inflammation, or the poor healing of a wound.

The main symptom of conjunctivitis is the red eye; however, an eye or red eyes do not always correspond to conjunctivitis. The general practitioner, or better the ophthalmologist will make the diagnosis. There are many reasons that may explain the occurrence of conjunctivitis ...
