The stages of IVF in video: the advice of the specialist doctor

Interview with Dr. Sylvie Epelboin, specialist hospital practitioner, head of the AMP unit, gynecology and obstetrics department at Bichat-Claude Bernard Hospital, Paris.

When a woman goes for IVF, does she have to eat a particular diet for success?

As for her diet, she will be recommended, as for anyone, especially pregnant women, a balanced diet and lifestyle, including stopping smoking which is known to reduce the chances of pregnancy.

Tobacco is not recommended during pregnancy. Also, being pregnant very often motivates women to stop smoking, so as not to harm the baby. If we inform them of the consequences of smoking on the results of IVF, women are similarly motivated to stop before.

Women with a varied diet do not need to take vitamin supplements in a systematic way, apart from vitamin B9.

Should the woman be followed by a psychologist ?

One of the causes of infertility may be psychological, quenching the process of IVF, the woman will be exposed to psychological turmoil, because of the treatments she undergoes, the stress she faces too. good in his professional life as personal, the fear of failure ...

Psychological counseling is desirable but not mandatory, couples who wish are informed that they can use it. Any approach imposed would be without benefit.

It is very important to establish a relationship of trust between the couple and the medical staff in order to accompany them, to help them and to answer their questions regardless of the outcome, especially in case of failure.

How to rebound in case of failure of IVF?

It all depends on the context and the number of attempts. A woman who fails after a first attempt may not react in the same way as a woman who has suffered several failures. It also depends on the preservation or not of supernumerary frozen embryos whose transfer can lead to pregnancy.

It is important that women are well informed before IVF, that they know the chances of success in their particular case.

The causes of failure can be multiple: absence of eggs at the puncture, no fertilization therefore of embryo, or no implantation of this embryo therefore of pregnancy. In any case, the analysis of the causes of failure makes it possible to propose a new adapted treatment.

After a failure of IVF, some women will need some time to recover from this event, while others will prefer to start again as soon as possible. They are advised to take the time to change their minds and give themselves the necessary rest for body and mind, but it is not always easy. Each couple must go at their own pace.

However, for some women time is short, especially because of the age that determines a decline in success, both IVF and natural, and the doctor will propose not to space the attempts too much.
