Cushing's disease: the symptoms

The symptoms of Cushing's disease are variable and inconsistent. In addition, Cushing's disease appears gradually. And his symptoms are often unobtrusive and sufficiently common to be overlooked. Most often, there are four symptoms to describe the disease:

> Fragility of the skin

The skin is thin, often marked by bruises, cutaneous ulcers. Stretch marks appear, very visible, in unusual places. The face is red. The patient suffers more easily nail fungus, skin.

> Morphological changes.

The person gains weight, with an abnormal distribution of fats, with so-called android obesity (inverted triangle), muscle wasting and thinning of the root of the limbs.

> High blood pressure

High blood pressure is a common symptom in Cushing's disease.

> Disorders of sexuality.

The symptoms are variable: menstrual disorders in women (amenorrhea), impotence in men, decreased libido.

To these main symptoms of the disease or Cushing's syndrome may be added secondary disturbances such as:

  • diabetes,
  • depression,
  • anxiety,
  • osteoporosis,
  • muscle fragility (fatigability),
  • an acne ...

The diagnosis

The diagnosis of Cushing's disease or Cushing's syndrome requires further investigation.

The best way to confirm the diagnosis and visualize a possible adenoma of the pituitary is to perform an MRI of the skull.

Abdominal CT or chest MRI can also be performed. There are also several blood or urine tests. Patients suffering from this condition are followed and treated by an endocrinologist.
