The abortion pill: what steps are to follow?

When you have decided to do an abortion, the first thing you should do is contact a Voluntary Pregnancy Termination Center, also known as the Orthogeny Center. Although a number have unfortunately closed, there are still many left. There is at least one per department and often more. Example: in the Nièvre, there are 2.

The other solution is to go to a city doctor (if the doctor has signed an agreement with a health facility, and is entitled to practice it - the list of authorized doctors is available at the planning center and family education near you). The last solution is to contact a Family Planning and Education Center - CPEF, and the doctor attached to it.

In consultation

In consultation , you will make your request to terminate your pregnancy.

The doctor will ask you the usual questions of a classic consultation: the date of your last period, your medical history, your allergies, if you have any. Then he will perform a clinical examination, and will make examinations to accurately date the pregnancy.

Then, your doctor will introduce you to the different abortion techniques that can be used as well as their possible risks and side effects.

In fact, the choice of the IVG method will depend on several factors including:
- your age,
- your general state of health,
- and especially the progress of your pregnancy, counted in weeks of amenorrhea (SA).

Indeed, depending on your term, you have two choices of abortion: the abortion pill (medicinal abortion) or surgical abortion (by aspiration):

> Pregnant of less than 9 weeks (7 weeks of pregnancy):
The doctor can offer you a drug- induced abortion (abortion pill).
This can be performed up to 9 SA, but requires hospitalization beyond 7 SA. Before 7 weeks of amenorrhea, in principle medicated IVG can be performed at home (the second tablet can be taken home).
If you nevertheless wish a surgical abortion, you can talk with the practitioner (usually from 7 weeks).

> Pregnant of more than 9 SA and less than 14 SA (12 weeks of pregnancy):
The doctor will have to propose a surgical abortion . It can however be proposed a little earlier if the woman asks for it or if the doctor proposes it.

> In France, beyond 14 weeks (12 weeks of pregnancy), an abortion can not be performed.

The doctor must also propose a consultation with a psychologist or a social worker (compulsory if the woman is a minor).

At the end of this consultation, if the woman is decided, an informed consent of IVG is signed by her, and he is put in the file.

The period of reflection formerly obligatory, no longer exists. so that the first abortion pill (because it will take 2 tablets) can be taken from the first consultation. And depending on the date of pregnancy, we can give you a second pill to take at home ... or you will have to come back to the hospital to take this second tablet.
