Lice: treatments

How to get rid of lice ? To get rid of badly-loved beasts, we must first use local treatments, but that is not enough.

Fighting lice means three things: eliminating adult lice, eliminating nits, but also limiting their transmission to another person.

Some of the traditional ways to get rid of lice include:

  • The total shaving of the skull . It's radical! In this way, lice, nits and hair that support them are eliminated. But if the method is effective, it can be difficult to live from an aesthetic point of view, especially for little girls.
  • The delousing by the comb . Combs anti-lice, we already found in our ancestors the Gauls. Suffice to say that if the method was really radical, since time, it would be known!
That said, the method is very popular across the Channel, in our British friends, who recommend it for children under six months (who do not have much hair yet), in pregnant women and asthmatics. But for the comb to be effective, it must pass in the hair at least 30 minutes, and this two to three times a day. A full-time job...
In all cases, a check after two days, and after twelve days is necessary to check that there is no reinfestation. And the treatment is to be renewed anyway a week later to short-circuit the breeding cycle of the lice.

Since the treatments traditionally used are no longer active, and lice have become resistant to insecticides (neurotoxic), we now use more ingenious products.

These new anti-lice treatments act mechanically to destroy the beast by suffocation or drowning.

Silicone products like dimeticone

It comes in the form of lotion. The product, in contact with air, dries quickly and forms a kind of plastic film that enters the airways of the louse and suffocates it, both inside and out, by wrapping it the bridant.

Disadvantage: if the product, in principle, is fully active, it is not fully developed. Its effectiveness rate is estimated at only 60%. In cause, its mode of application. For it to be active, it must be poured a lot on the hair and not stop at the aspect "wet".

Another track: the formulation. Some silicone products are not stable. But they are sold anyway, because at the moment no regulation in this field, obliges the laboratories to validate their products by really evaluating their effectiveness.

Oily products

These are all lotions based on coconut oil or anise. The first observations show that lice die "drowned". If the lice do not die in the water (their breathing holes close and protect them from drowning for several minutes, the time of a shampoo for example), oils and greasy products asphyxiate quickly.

In some countries where shampoos and treatments are too expensive, you use oil or shea butter to get rid of lice. And it works. Not only mechanically, but it is likely that a chemical toxicity of these oils exists, which is not yet demonstrated.

In total, these new anti-lice treatments ("choke") are more effective than the older ones who were neurotoxic. Moreover, we find today in pharmacy, products that claim effectiveness after a single application. Above all, apply the tips on the medicine's leaflet.

Another advantage: these new treatments feel a lot less bad than the old ones ...
