Hip prosthesis

Certain diseases of the hip gradually destroy this articulation and it becomes at a certain stage of evolution necessary to replace it by a prosthesis during a surgical operation.

The hip, a powerful articulation

The hip, also called the hip joint, is a powerful, deep joint, embedded in thick muscles. Each hip supports half the weight of the body while standing and when walking all the weight of the body every other step.

It is composed of the femoral head which is the upper part of the femur and acetabulum which is represented by a cavity carved in the iliac bone (or hip bone) and in which the head of the femur is inserted. These two bony ends are covered with cartilage. The hip joint is held firmly in place by ligaments and muscles

Femur neck fracture and osteoarthritis of the hip

The cartilage can wear more or less regularly because of osteoarthritis or a malformation like congenital dislocation of hip, it will lead to the appearance of pains, difficulties of mobilization of the joint and the appearance of stiffness; in the end, the quality of life will be affected. It is a therapeutic indication of hip prosthesis. Frequently, both hips are affected and both can be replaced by prostheses.

The fracture of the femoral neck is seen mainly in menopausal and elderly women, most often following a common fall. From a certain age, they often have osteoporosis, the bones are fragile and break more easily; the muscles are less developed because they move less, the balance is not always perfect. The operation to set up a hip prosthesis is often indicated to treat this fracture.

Hip trauma may also be indicative of a hip prosthesis, hip fractures are rarely seen in younger subjects, they follow a violent trauma, or during a road accident. it is sometimes necessary to replace the joint with a prosthesis.

There are other causes responsible for the destruction of a hip such as necrosis of the femoral head, a rheumatic disease.
