Varice: the symptoms

The classic symptom of a varicose vein - or varicose veins - is a dilation of a vein over a larger or smaller portion. This symptom appears in a standing position. Moreover, the doctor always examines the standing patient to visualize varicose veins.

Varicose veins sometimes form a sort of rosary on a leg's path. Usually, varicose veins appear as dilated veins, visible on the surface of the legs. They sometimes look like tiny red or purple streaks of one to two millimeters in diameter. They are called telangiectasias or varicosities.

The pain associated with venous insufficiency gives the impression of heaviness. It can also take the appearance of impatience, heaviness, pain on the venous pathways concerned or cramps.

The pain goes away very well with the wearing of compression sock. In contrast, heat, premenstrual periods, prolonged standing aggravate the symptom.

Edema of the feet may also indicate venous insufficiency.

In addition to these varicose veins, varicose veins may also appear on the legs, corresponding to the involvement of small vessels (small red or purplish streaks).

Note: the veins of athletes are a little dilated sometimes, but they are not varicose veins.

When these symptoms occur, the opinion of a general practitioner is needed who can refer the patient to a phlebologist or a doctor or vascular surgeon. He will perform a Doppler ultrasound to precisely evaluate the venous network superficial (cutaneous) and deep (intramuscular) venous networks.
