Varice: treatments and complications

Varicose veins and venous insufficiency can be the subject of sometimes major complications.

If they are large in diameter and you bump, they can break. Hemorrhage is then easily treated by local compression. The internal rupture that causes hemorrhage in the leg, in a muscular lodge, causes pain because of the hematoma created.

Venous insufficiency can also cause trophic disorders in the skin: dermatitis, varicose ulcers (sluggish wounds) ...

Blood stasis can cause clots to form in the veins. The deep venous network is then the seat of a thrombosis (blood clot in the vein), it is a phlebitis.

Treatments

Once this assessment is performed by a specialist doctor, different treatments are proposed depending on the number of varicose veins, their location, their consequences ... and the importance of venous insufficiency.

Among the first treatments: prevention by compression, compression is useful. So as soon as the signs appear, or in conditions favoring the stagnation of the blood in the veins, the compression stockings are indicated:

  • flight,
  • pregnancy,
  • prolonged standing or trampling,
  • special professions: flight attendants, salespersons ...

The degree of restraint is variable: prescribed by a doctor according to the degree of venous insufficiency, they are reimbursed by Social Security. Moreover, the stockings with varices of our grandmothers are gone, today many models proposed in pharmacy are quite seyants.

As for the veno-tonic drugs, it is not really proved that they prevent the aggravation of the venous insufficiency, and still less the aggravation of the varicose veins.

But the true treatment of varicose veins is done using specific instruments and techniques. There are several possible actions depending on the vein reached: the laser for small vessels (spider veins) is an innocuous gesture.

Sclerotherapy is used for small-sized varicose veins: a very fine catheter is introduced into the vein, the doctor gradually injects a sclerosing substance along the venous path leading to a fibrosis of the vein, then its eventual disappearance.

Stripping is a true surgical procedure indicated when the vein is sick on a long journey. Stripping is reserved for large veins and requires hospitalization. There are different stripping techniques.

After these treatments, these interventions, it is generally necessary to wear compression stockings for several weeks ... sometimes even, it will be recommended to wear them as often as possible.
