Stretch marks are due to embrittlement and too fast or too strong distention of certain areas of the skin. In fact, there are breaks in some deep layers of the skin (elastic, collagen). The skin then becomes less thick and there are some kinds of depressions on the epidermis (the superficial layer of the skin).
The main causes of fracture of these fibers are mechanical stress and hormonal changes. This explains why stretch marks usually occur during adolescence (because of too rapid growth and the development of muscle mass), or in case of rapid weight changes (slimming or weight gain too fast, resulting in distension of the skin).
Stretch marks can also occur in part because of pregnancy. In pregnant women, especially during the last weeks of pregnancy, stretch marks may appear in the lower abdomen, upper thighs ...
In the case of a rare hormonal disease called Cushing's disease (hypersecretion of hormones of the adrenal gland), large and often purple stretch marks occur almost systematically.
Another cause: some medications, such as cortisone taken for a long time, can also cause stretch marks.
